SPRING CHOKO PLANTING
This spring we are seeking Darebin Growers to home our new Choko Seedlings and help us alleviate food insecurity in our community. Choko’s are drought resistant, highly nutritious and an excellent source of vitamin C, folate, pantothenic acid and vitamin E. Fostering our Choko seedlings will add an extremely productive crop to address food insecurity in our community: one choko is capable of producing up to 60kg of nutritious food.
This is exactly the type of crop we need to support our food system and we need volunteers to home 25 seedlings which were donated to DIVRS by local seed saver and garden extraordinaire Kat Lavers. Chokos vines need trellis support and are well suited to planting along a wall or fence, so please contact us if you have a suitable space we can use. The DIVRS team will assist with advice on growing and supporting your foster plants. Once harvested a portion of your Choko crop will go into our food relief packages for people experiencing food insecurity in our community.
If you are a veg squad member and would like to contribute to our program by fostering our choko seedlings, please contact Vanessa at urbanfood@divrs.org.au
If you are new to DIVRS and would like to help us with our Choko project, please sign up for Veg Squad here.
As a member of our Veg Squad we ask you donate a portion of your harvest back to DIVRS so we can pass your bounty along in our food relief packages for those experiencing food insecurity in our community. Ideally, we ask for 50% of your harvest, as we have seen an increase in need within the community due to the pandemic, but we also understand this may not be possible for everyone. Let’s discuss!
