Home Grown Goodness
Forget the big stretch of weedy lawn and lonely lemon tree out the back. The Darebin Urban Growers team is all about productive patches and making the most of the land that is available to us.
Darebin Urban Growers produces freshly harvested food for our Emergency Relief service. These fresh food parcels go to Darebin people experiencing food insecurity.
Our 20-strong volunteer team grows food across four sites: Alphington Food Hub, Newton St Garden, Oakhill Food Justice Farm and in our own back yard at High St, Preston.
Our goal is a complete cycle of food growth:
PROPAGATE: Seeds and soil
PLANT: Volunteers grow seedlings
HARVEST: Plants tended and harvested
COMPOST: Leftovers straight to compost heap
There is soil and manure and mulch. There is mud and rain and sunshine. We are having fun and we are making a difference.
The work is guided by permaculture principles and powered by volunteers who live locally.
Together we are easing food shortages and making access to food fairer. Our Darebin Urban Growers team shares its knowledge to seed the principles of sustainability in all of us.
And of course, there is always time for a cup of tea.
