Be a driving force for good

It’s no accident that the TAC L2P learner driver program is run by the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC). The TAC is keen to drive down crashes and road deaths - and it needs your help.

Moving from an L plate to a P plate is a big deal for our young drivers. It means independence and better work opportunities. But we all know the dangers of under-prepared drivers on the roads.

The TAC L2P Program helps young learners get the 120 hours of driving they need for a probationary licence - P plates.

With you by their side, learners can become safe, confident drivers. Having you in the passenger seat is also a chance for young people to mix with positive adult role models.

The TAC L2P program gives you a way to make a difference in the Darebin community and well beyond.

HOW IT WORKS

The TAC L2P Program matches learners with a fully licensed volunteer driver and a practice vehicle.

Don’t worry about bunny hopping out of the car park. Before you step in, learners can receive several free driving lessons with a professional instructor. They progress through the Graduated Learning System:

  • Stage 1 – Basic car control

  • Stage 2 – Quiet streets

  • Stage 3 – Complex traffic

  • Stage 4 – Rehearsing solo

This helps build their basic skills before they jump in the car with you.

TRAINING THE TRAINER

It is a big role, but don’t be nervous. We have a full training program so you are well prepared to mentor a learner driver and understand your responsibilities.

To join the TAC L2P program as a mentor you must:

  • Be over 21 years old

  • Hold a current full Victorian driver’s licence

  • Have a satisfactory driver’s licence history report

  • Get a current Working With Children check and National Police Check

  • Be medically fit to drive (we may discuss this through the application process)

  • Not be currently working as a professional driving instructor

  • Be able to commit about 2 hours per week

The TAC L2P Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Department of Transport (DoT), supported by the Victorian Government and coordinated by DIVRS.

To apply for the TAC L2P driver mentor program, you must use the application form on the VicRoads website, via the link below.

Once we receive the application form, we will contact you to go through next steps.
